The Municipal Council of the Bulgarian city of Ruse unanimously adopted on Thursday a declaration against the construction of a hospital waste incinerator in the neighboring city of Giurgiu in Romania.
The proposal was made by the president of the Ruse Municipal Council, Hristo Beloev, who recalled that a joint meeting of the municipal councils of the two cities took place in Giurgiu on Tuesday, during which the text of the declaration was discussed, reports Agerpres.
The objective is to express the position of the two municipalities regarding the intentions of an investor to build an incinerator on the territory of Giurgiu municipality, dangerously close to populated areas, representing an immediate and potential danger to a healthy and safe environment for the inhabitants of both cities.
The statement also states that public reactions in Giurgiu and Ruse clearly show a strong concern and categorical opposition of the residents to having such an incinerator in close proximity to populated areas.
The municipal councilors demanded immediate and full transparency from the investor and all competent state bodies regarding the potential risks, through a full, objective and independent assessment of the environmental and human health impacts in the two municipalities. They insisted that the competent state institutions must undertake all legal and concrete steps and support the interests of the residents of Ruse and Giurgiu to protect their right to a safe, clean, healthy and sustainable environment.
