Manhunt in France. Two prisoners escaped from the cell by cutting through the bars


The fugitives are men aged 19 and 32. The younger one was serving a sentence for drug trafficking, which the court sentenced him to in the so-called with immediate effect in 2024. His older companion has been in prison since April 2023. He was convicted in a case involving domestic violence and threats against his partner.

The AFP agency noted that the authorities of this prison had previously informed the Ministry of Justice that due to overcrowding of this penitentiary, the level of security there had significantly deteriorated.

Overcrowded prisons in France

The prison in Dijon houses 311 inmates for 180 places, i.e. the occupancy rate is 172%.

Prison directors accused the Ministry of Justice of focusing all its efforts on prisons where drug traffickers are imprisoned, to the detriment of the situation in other prisons.

According to the July report of the Council of Europe, France – along with Cyprus and Slovenia – is one of the countries with the most overcrowded prisons in the entire European Union.
