Peace plan. Head of the German Foreign Ministry: it is important that Poland's interests are taken into account
Speaking about the peace plan for Ukraine, the German Foreign Minister said that “it must be clear” that no decision regarding Ukraine can be made without the participation of Ukrainians and Europeans. — It is important that the interests and concerns of Eastern Europe, and especially Poland, are taken into account, he said.
He considered it important that the current front line was “a starting point for negotiations.”
— Even if the fighting stopped today, there would remain an imperial and aggressive Russia, whose ambitions go far beyond Ukraine. Russia has subordinated its economy and society to war, Wadephul said.
At the same time, the head of German diplomacy noted that Russia “recruits one division a month”, and this is more than it needs in the war with Ukraine. He expressed fear that Moscow was interested in aggression against the EU and NATO.
— The threat to our country from Russia is not distant, it is real today, said Wadephul, emphasizing that Russia is already conducting a hybrid war, including using drones.
“The US sometimes has an unorthodox way of approaching problem solving.”
According to the Christian Democrat politician, NATO and the EU constitute the “foundation of Germany's foreign policy” and this situation will continue. He considered the United States to be Berlin's most important partner, emphasizing that Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty remains in force.
Wadephul acknowledged that the United States has a “sometimes unorthodox approach to solving problems.” Ultimately, however, they are to be “flexible and ready to take into account the partners' position.”
Polish-German intergovernmental consultations will be held on December 1 in Berlin.
