Robert Prevost has always felt a calling
According to John Doughney, a friend of prevost from school St. Mary's, cited by Chicago Suntimes, the appointment of Pope Leo XIV was visible in the early years of youth. Former parishioner of St. Mary's admitted that as a teenager, the cardinal showed great determination and awareness when it comes to the issues of faith.
Robert Prevost at the age of 27 was ordained a priest. He obtained a doctorate in canon law at the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas in Rome. From 1985, he served as a priest, missionary and lecturer. Then he returned to the United States, where in the years 2001-2013 he was the superior of the General of the Order of Saint Augustine.
Robert Prevost had a good relationship with Pope Francis
Robert Prevost had very good relations with the deceased Pope Francis. According to Vatican News, he met him in Buenos Aires when he visited him as a general of the Augustinian order. In 2014, Pope Francis appointed prevosta the apostolic administrator of the Diocese of Chiclayo in Peru, and a month later the cardinal was ordained a bishop. In 2015, he officially became the bishop of Chiclayo, and in 2018 the second vice -chairman of the Peru Episcopate conference.
In 2023, Pope Francis appointed him a prefect of dicasteries for bishops and chairman of the Pontifical Latin American Commission, bringing prevosta to the dignity of the Archbishop. In September of the same year he was created a cardinal with the title church of St. Monika. In October, Franciszek appointed him to membership in seven dicasteries, including the dicasteries for evangelization and teaching of faith.
On February 6 this year, Cardinal Prevost was included in the group of cardinals of bishops, and the Pope awarded him the diocese of Albano. A few weeks later he presided over the rosary prayer in St. Peter, praying for the health of Pope Francis, who was then in the Roman polyclinic Gemella.
Robert Prevost took the name Leon XIV
On May 8, Robert Prevost spoke to a crowd gathered in St. Piotr already as Pope Leon XIV. – We not only want, but we also need peace in our time. This is the peace of the Risen Christ who disarms. God who loves us all, without any conditions. We keep this voice, a weak, but always brave, Pope Francis, who blessed Rome. The Pope, who blessed Rome, gave his blessing to the whole world. Let me continue this blessing, God loves us all, […] We are all in the hands of God. […] United, let's go forward, Christ leads us, the world needs his light – The new pope said.
“We must try to be a missionary church together, which builds bridges and dialogue, which accepts all those who need our mercy, dialogues and love,” said Leon XIV.
