The Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR) had a first reaction after the decision of the Constitutional Court of Romania (CCR) to reject the law on the payment of private pensions, a decision that the opposition party described as “a confirmation of the fact that the law voted by the majority of PSD, PNL, USR and UDMR was constructed defectively and with major risks for the financial rights of citizens”, reports News.ro.

The communique comes in the context in which the CCR announced that it accepted the referrals submitted by the High Court of Cassation and Justice and the AUR against the law which stipulated that, after retirement, Romanians will be able to withdraw a maximum of 30% of the amount from private pension funds, and the rest of the money will be able to be paid monthly for a maximum of 8 years.

For now, the Court has officially announced only the decision, not the reasons, but sources within the institution told HotNews that the law was rejected because of the article that established that cancer patients can withdraw all their money accumulated in the private pension fund.

“Even if this institution has generated numerous controversies in recent months and affected the trust of Romanians through decisions that are difficult to explain, the reality is clear: the law promoted by PSD, PNL, USR and UDMR violates the right of citizens to have access to their own contributions, and this could not be ignored,” AUR said in Tuesday's statement.

“The state should not become a forced manager of people's savings”

According to the opposition party, the CCR decision “shows that, when the legislation contradicts the constitutional provisions, it can be corrected, regardless of who is in power”.

“The AUR will continue to carefully check all legislative projects that concern citizens' private funds and intervene whenever the right to property is put at risk. For us it is essential that the state does not become a forced manager of people's savings. Romanians' money must remain Romanians', and any attempt to limit access to these contributions will find the AUR in firm opposition”, concluded the AUR.
