Bournemouth are at risk of losing their star player from the opening weeks of the winter transfer window. According to information published by The Athleticthe club have come to accept that they will not have full control over Antoine Semenyo's situation due to a release clause that can be activated in early January.
Semenyo, who has been in excellent form this season, has a £65 million (approx. €74 million) release clause in his new contract (signed in July and valid until 2030).
The £65m release clause can throw him straight into the arms of the Premier League giants
BBC Sport notes that this can only be activated in the first two weeks of the winter window, precisely to give Bournemouth time to find a replacement.
There is no lack of interest. Manchester United, Ruben Amorim's team, and Tottenham also wanted him in the summer, but then Bournemouth managed to keep him.
Now, however, the club can no longer stop him if a giant pays the clause.
A top season for Antoine Semenyo
At 25, Semenyo is one of Andoni Iraola's fittest players.
In the current season, he has 6 goals and 3 assists in just 11 Premier League games.
Last season was the first in which he surpassed the 10-goal mark in the championship, contributing essentially to the 9th place finish.
An unexpected route to the Premier League
Born in London, Semenyo was rejected as a child by Arsenal, Tottenham and Millwall.
He then joined Dave Hockaday's academy, and in 2017 was signed by Bristol City, where he gradually progressed after loan spells at Bath, Newport and Sunderland.
Bournemouth bought him in January 2023 for £10m and his development has exploded since then.
Today, according to transfermarkt, he is valued at 55 million euros, and in 101 official matches for the “cherries” he managed 28 goals and 13 decisive assists.
