Peace plan. The overnight statement from the US and Ukraine reveals details

The document published by the administrations of the US and Ukrainian presidents states that “both sides agreed that the consultations were very fruitful.” “The discussions showed significant progress towards reconciling positions and defining clear next steps. It was confirmed that any future agreement must fully respect Ukraine's sovereignty and ensure a lasting and just peace. As a result of the discussions, the parties developed an updated and improved peace plan,” the statement said.

What elements does the new peace plan contain?

When did the meeting between the US and Ukraine take place?

What were the reactions of the Ukrainian delegation to US involvement?

What did Marco Rubio say about the recent talks?

“The Ukrainian delegation reaffirmed its gratitude for the steadfast commitment of the United States, and President Donald J. Trump personally, for their tireless efforts to end the war and the loss of life. Ukraine and the United States agreed to continue working intensively on joint proposals in the coming days. They will also remain in close contact with their European partners as the process progresses,” the document continues.

In the final part, it was emphasized that “the final decisions under this plan will be made by the presidents of Ukraine and the United States” and at the same time “both sides confirmed their readiness to continue cooperation for peace that will guarantee the security, stability and reconstruction of Ukraine.”

Peace plan for Ukraine. Marco Rubio on his “most productive day”

A few hours earlier, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said after Sunday's talks with the Ukrainian delegation in Geneva that it was the most productive day since the beginning of involvement in the peace process. However, he stated that some things remain to be determined and more time is needed. “It was the best day in our entire 10 months of working on these problems,” Rubio said during a news conference after meetings with the Ukrainian delegation and the British, French and German delegations in Geneva.

— There are several issues that we need to continue working on (…) the work is still ongoing, and since it is still a process, I do not want to declare victory or the end. There's still some work to do, but we're a lot further today than we were when we started and we're certainly further ahead than we were a week ago,' he added.

Rubio declined to publicly discuss any details or changes to the 28-point — and, as Rubio has stated, in some versions, 26-point — plan. He noted, however, that “Russia also has a say in this matter.” He also stated that he knew nothing about any counterproposal from European countries.
