Officials of Viktor Orban's government criticized the objections brought by several European states to the initial project proposed to Ukraine, writes Reuters.

Budapest called on the EU on Monday to unconditionally back the US-proposed Ukraine peace plan, even after it was rejected by most Europeans, and Washington and Kiev have already worked on an updated version in Geneva.

“The 28-point peace plan represents a major chance to end the war in Ukraine, and every European politician has a duty to fully and unconditionally support this plan,” Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto wrote on X on Monday.

On Saturday, he criticized Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk's objections to the initial version of the peace plan, saying Hungary was “in favor of peace” while “they are pro-war”.

On Sunday, Europeans presented an amended version of the United States' peace plan for Ukraine, which rejects proposed limits on Kiev's armed forces and territorial concessions.

Also Sunday, but overnight, Washington and Kiev said they had drawn up a “modified peace framework” after Sunday's first day of talks in Geneva, without giving details.

Viktor Orban's letter

It is not the first time that Hungary urged the EU to accept the plan drawn up by the US, together with Russia.

In a letter sent to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on Saturday, obtained by Politico, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán himself asked the EU to sign the terms of the 28-point US proposal, which would see Ukraine relinquish territory and halve its armed forces, in exchange for giving Washington a 50% share of the profits from the country's reconstruction.

“Europeans must immediately and unconditionally support the US peace initiative,” Orbán wrote. “In addition to supporting the US president, we must launch autonomous and direct negotiations with Russia without delay,” he added.

At the same time, Orbán stated in the letter that Hungary “does not support the granting by the European Union of any additional financial aid to Ukraine under any form” and “does not agree with taking such a decision on behalf of and within the EU.”

Officials in Brussels are currently in talks with member countries on how they can use frozen Russian assets to provide Ukraine with a €140 billion loan for reparations. The issue is on the agenda of the leaders' meeting in Brussels on December 18.

Budapest has consistently tried to block much-needed military and financial aid to Kiev's defense efforts, while strengthening Hungary's ties to the Kremlin and opposing sanctions aimed at draining Russian President Vladimir Putin's war funds.
