The huge African Cup of Nations scandal takes a new turn. The Confederation of African Football has officially announced that it will respect the Court of Arbitration for Sport's (CAS) ruling in the case of Senegal's title withdrawal, while the leadership of the African forum faces a major resignation.
The final of the Africa Cup of Nations turned into an unprecedented case. Senegal won at home 1-0, the decisive goal being scored by Pape Gueye. In extra time, the Senegalese players left the field in protest, and later CAF decided to award Morocco a 3-0 victory.
The decision, announced on March 17, almost two months after the match played in Rabat, provoked extremely harsh reactions from Senegalese officials.
CAF President, official announcement: “We will respect any decision of TAS”
The president of the Confederation of African Football, Patrice Motsepe, confirmed that the institution will not appeal the final decision of the CAS:
“We will respect any decision made by the Court of Arbitration for Sport in relation to the decision to revoke Senegal's Africa Cup of Nations (CAN) title.“
The statement comes after Senegal appealed, refusing to accept the verdict that awarded the trophy to Morocco at the “green table”.
In mid-March, the president of the Senegalese federation described the situation as “the most flagrant administrative theft in the history of sportsAfrican officials, however, went further, announcing that they will not hand over the trophy until the final decision of the CAS is communicated.

Amid scandal, Veron Mosengo-Omba announced his resignation as CAF Secretary General after over 30 years in football. “After more than three decades of international activity, where I have tried to promote a football that unites people, educates and offers opportunities for hope, I have decided to step down as CAF Secretary General to focus on personal projects.
Having managed to clear up the suspicions that have been directed at me, I can retire with peace of mind and without constraints, leaving CAF more prosperous than ever.
I sincerely thank the CAF President, Dr. Patrice Motsepe, my team and all those who, directly or indirectly, have contributed to the real and remarkable progress of organized African football. I hope that this evolution will be maintained and supported in the long term”.
