Explosions at a power plant in the Moscow region. The Russians claim that the facility was hit by Ukrainian drones

The Shatura thermal power plant, one of Russia's largest energy complexes, located about 120 kilometers east of Moscow, was reportedly hit on Saturday night in a drone attack attributed to Ukraine. Images of loud explosions and a massive fire appeared on social media, but the Ukrainian military has yet to comment on the incident.

Several Russian Telegram channels, cited by the Kyiv Independent, reported Sunday morning that the Shatura thermal power plant was the target of a Ukrainian attack on the night of November 23. Clips are circulating on social platforms showing a loud explosion, followed by a fire in the area of the plant, the images suggesting that it was hit by a projectile.

The Russian news agency Tass reported that the attack was carried out by Ukrainian drones. The Shatura thermal power plant, one of the oldest and largest power plants in Russia, has a capacity of approximately 1,500 MW and supplies electricity to several localities in the Moscow region.

The context of the intensification of attacks on the energy infrastructure

The Ukrainian press notes that the attack on the Shatura plant is part of a wider series of operations by Kiev targeting Russia's military, oil, industrial and energy infrastructure. Ukraine routinely uses domestically developed drones to strike targets hundreds of kilometers away.

The attack comes as Ukraine steps up pressure on Russia's energy infrastructure, considered a key source of revenue for Moscow, which fuels the war. In parallel, Russia has increased the number of strikes on Ukrainian energy infrastructure in recent months, trying to cause blackouts during the winter.

For the time being, there is no clear information on the extent of damage from Șatura or possible victims. Russian authorities did not provide further details about the impact of the attack.
