Participants of a study on the image of psychologists conducted by the Institute of Psychology of the University of Lodz and the Scientific Committee of the XXXVII Congress of the Polish Psychological Association were asked whether the fact of using the help of a psychologist may be stigmatizing and negatively perceived by other people.

Definitely yes – 10 percent answered. respondents. Probably yes – 30 percent. Probably not – 24% answered. respondents, and definitely not – 12 percent It's hard to say – this answer was given by 24%. subjects.

“The opinion about the stigmatization of people using psychological services is slowly changing,” said prof. Ph.D. Eleonora Bielawska-Batorowicz.

She emphasized that this is evidenced by the growing demand for psychological services and ongoing discussions about necessary actions that could shorten the waiting time for a visit to a psychologist, especially in non-commercial facilities.

According to the respondents, psychologists are needed in schools – 90 percent, in the police – 88 percent, in the army – 87 percent, in social welfare – 87 percent, in health care – 87 percent, in courts – 79 percent, in kindergartens – 77 percent, at universities – 71 percent, in business – 59 percent, at work, in the workplace – 50 percent.

The majority of Poles (66%) believe that psychologist is a profession of social trust, and 77%. believes that it should be regulated and legally protected – according to the survey.

It was noted that psychologists are perceived as patient – 81% think so. respondents, attentive (79%), understanding (79%), based on scientific knowledge (76%), competent (75%), open (75%) and accepting (75%).

The study of the image of psychologists was conducted by the Institute of Psychology of the University of Lodz and the Scientific Committee of the XXXVII Congress of the Polish Society of Psychologists on the nationwide Ariadna research panel; on a nationwide, random quota sample of 1,146 people. The samples in total amounts for gender, age and size of town and marginal amounts for education and voivodeship were selected according to the representation in the population of Poles aged 18 and over.
