Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan announced that the Government accepted that the standard retirement age of magistrates should increase from 48 years to 65 years in a transition period of 15 years, 5 years more than the previous draft provided. At the same time, Bolojan announced the timeline for assuming responsibility for the new draft law on the pensions of judges and prosecutors, but conditional on the speed with which the CSM will send the opinion to the Victoria Palace.

“Yesterday the Government, through the Ministry of Labor, submitted the project for approval. From the public signals we have seen, from the fact that the CSM has convened the general meetings, there are good premises for us to receive an approval much faster than the maximum term of 30 days. We propose that next week, if we receive the approval, on Thursday in the government meeting or on Friday, the 28th at the latest, we will start the procedure for hiring responsibility”, said Ilie Bolojan, in a press briefing held at the Victoria Palace.

The Head of the Executive specified that the Government accepted the extension of the transition period to the new retirement age, following the meeting with the representatives of the magistrates, which was mediated, last week, by the President Nicușor Dan.

“Compared to 10 years, when the transition period for raising the retirement age from 48 to 65 years was foreseen, we accepted a period of 15 years. Thus, for each year that will pass, the period of activity will be extended by another year (…) We remained on the original percentage that the pension in the magistrature should not exceed 70% of the last net salary”, stated Bolojan.

He stated that the assumption procedure must be launched by November 28 in order to meet the deadline of the PNRR milestone that conditions the access to European funds, and the second basic element concerns the correction of an injustice which is represented by retirement at 48 years old, as well as the pension as much as the last salary.

“The third element relates to an economy on a healthy basis and a sustainable pension system. If the opinion is not received, we will have to wait for that term. I hope that all those involved behave responsibly”, the prime minister said, referring to the opinion that must come from the Superior Council of Magistracy.
