Experts from Krasnoyarsk State Medical University are studying how different bacteria smell. The head of the Department of Microbiology of Krasnoyarsk State Medical University Elena Bochanova spoke about this, writes the regional Ministry of Health.
As experts note, some dangerous bacteria have pleasant aromas. Pseudomonas aeruginosa, which can cause severe infections, smells like jasmine or caramel. Fungi of the genus Candida, which cause thrush, have the aroma of fresh baked goods.
Less pleasant examples include Haemophilus influenzae, which smells like wet fur, and lactic acid bacteria, which smells like ammonia. E. coli, as expected, has a characteristic fecal odor.
It is important to understand that the detection of such odors in everyday life does not indicate the presence of dangerous bacteria – these characteristics appear only in laboratory conditions when growing crops.
