Former French president Nicolas Sarkozy announced on Friday that his book about his stay in prison, where he spent three weeks, will be published on December 10. It will be “The Diary of a Prisoner”, which Sarkozy began writing on the first day of his stay in the Sante prison in Paris.

Announcing its release, Sarkozy wrote a few sentences in a commentary referring to prison conditions. He mentioned the “constant noise” in Sante, as well as the fact that “there is nothing to look at or do in prison.” However, “like the desert, inner life is strengthened in prison,” he added.

The book, with 216 pages and priced at less than 21 euros, will be published by Fayard publishing house. It belongs to right-wing businessman Vincent Bollore, who also owns a media empire. Bollore's critics accuse his media of promoting the far right.

Three weeks in prison

Following the court verdict, Sarkozy found himself in Sante prison on October 21. On November 10, he left because the court agreed to release him under judicial supervision.

In September this year Sarkozy was sentenced to five years in prison and is appealing against this verdict; the appeal will be considered in 2026. The former president (2007-12) was found guilty of criminal conspiracy in connection with allegations that his 2007 election campaign was financed by Libya. Sarkozy is the first former French head of state to be imprisoned following a verdict.
