Sociologist Gelu Duminică (48 years old) had a live intervention on the “GSP Live” show and addressed the racism scandal that broke out in Zenica, caused by Bosnian supporters at the match with the Romanian national team, who shouted “Gypsies, Gypsies!” during the 2026 World Cup qualifying match.
The sociologist believes that this moment should give us food for thought, pointing out that such chants take place repeatedly in the Romanian championship.
On Sunday, Gelu commented on the racism scandal from Bosnia – Romania: “It's a double standard”
In a dialogue with Mihai Mironică at GSP Live, Gelu Duminică compared the racism scandal in Bosnia with what happens in the stadiums in Romania, in domestic competitions.
“Certainly that chant had the role of creating tension among the players, but I don't know if that tension was what generated the result. It's very likely that there will be a penalty for Bosnia, but I don't think it will come down to winning the match.
I think this should also make us think about what we ourselves tolerate at home. We also hear such chants in our stadiums and, very often, we tolerate them considering that they are just gallery songs.
We must understand that evil is evil, no matter who produces it. That chant promoted and supported by the Bosnian gallery has nothing to do with sports. If we want to be respected, we must first offer respect to each other. This does not mean that the Bosnian gallery was not glaringly wrong. I am convinced that the specialized forum will act accordingly.
The arbitrator had the obligation to implement certain measures. Despite the fact that those chants were obvious, I think they take the referee into the area of responsibility. Otherwise, I would not like to discuss much about the football area.
I'm more interested, and I treat my comment from this perspective: «what you don't like, don't do to others», how we can learn from what happened.
It's a double standard, that's what I'm trying to say. The moment we tolerate evil, that evil can happen to us. We have to question very well, respect is given first time. In the present case, I did not notice a lack of respect on the part of the Romanian team. I didn't notice it, I'm not saying it just doesn't exist.
At the moment we must rather look at the connotation. If you say «person of color» it is not OK, if you say «black», it is not necessarily OK, but it can be tolerated by the fact that it was promoted with good intentions.
The moment you shout “blacks, blacks”, it changes. From my point of view, it's pure racism. They didn't say “we like the music of the gypsies”, but they said “to the gypsies, the gypsies” with the aim of inducing the feeling of inferiority”.
I'm interested in what happened here. I have never seen such a lack of hospitality in my career. I sat on a one and a half meter aisle, there was no seat. And the players had a very small space of 4×4. This stadium is not made for football.
There is a lack of hospitality. Shouts and boos at the anthem. We in Bucharest received them very nicely, in a proper stadium. I have never seen anything like this in my career. I didn't hear the anthem because of the boos!
