Globally, the most confused personal finance terms are “ETF,” “forex,” and “GDP,” with monthly search volumes ranging from 700,000 to 950,000, according to a BestBrokers analysis. These terms generate the most searches in countries such as the United States, Sweden, India, Germany and Japan.
Here are some key takeaways from their research:
- “ETF” is the most confusing financial term, with 949,000 monthly queries. Many people confuse ETFs with “mutual funds” or find it difficult to understand their trading mechanisms and tax implications. Frequently asked questions include: “What is an ETF?”, “How is it different from an index fund?” and “Are ETFs good for beginners?”.
- The term “Forex” attracts 804,000 searches, especially in Sweden, the US and India. Users often confuse it with trading stocks or cryptocurrencies and are not sure about the complexity and risks of the market.
- “GDP”, searched 698,000 times per month, is often misunderstood as a measure of individual wealth or income. Popular searches include: “What does GDP measure?” , “Does an increase in GDP mean I'm doing better?” and “Is GDP per capita the same as income?”

- In the US, the 401(k) system dominates personal finance searches, with 310,000 monthly searches focused on tax advantages and withdrawal rules. Overseas, in the UK, 'credit score' tops the list, generating 97,000 searches, many dealing with unexpected bills and confusion over tax brackets.
- In France, Italy and Spain the focus is on ETFs, while Scandinavian countries such as Sweden and Norway show a strong interest in “forex”.
- Estonia has “ROI” as its top financial search, while the Philippines and Denmark are the only two countries where “inflation” leads, signaling lingering concerns about the rising cost of living.
