The Chief of Staff of the National Defense, General Gheorghiță Vlad, stated on Thursday that the drone that fell two nights ago in the area of Grindu, in Tulcea county, was not combated, as there was no threat in the respective firing position of the defense system.
“It is an organized combat device in that area. In that firing position, in that direction, there was no threat. I said and I repeat it, as always, we have a very large area to cover in terms of air defense. As a result, we focus on the protection of populated areas. This is also the reason why that drone did not come into the range of the combat system and, as a result, could not be engaged. It did not the problem did not take a second to be fought because it did not enter the range of action of that system”, said the head of the Romanian army, in Poligonul Cincu, according to Agerpres.
General Gheorghiță Vlad specified that the current legislation allows the decentralization of the decision to combat a possible aerial target, up to the level of the unit commander.
“So, if that was the case, that target was engaged. It fell far enough away that it couldn't be engaged by that anti-aircraft system,” the National Defense Staff chief noted.
A RO-ALERT message was sent on Tuesday morning to the residents of the northern area of Tulcea county informing them about the possibility of objects falling from the airspace, against the background of the war in Ukraine, a call to 112 announcing that such an object would have fallen near Grindu.
Representatives of the Ministry of National Defense (MApN), the County Police Inspectorate and the Romanian Intelligence Service checked, on Tuesday morning, the place where one of the drones used by Russia fell in the war in Ukraine.
MApN informed on Tuesday, in a press release, that the previous night Romania's radars had signaled the presence of groups of drones in the area adjacent to the national airspace, which determined the preventive activation of anti-aircraft defense systems.
“The weather conditions in the south-eastern area of the country did not allow the Air Police combat service aircraft to take off. At 01:09, MApN was informed about the impact of an air vehicle with the ground, in the Grindu area, approximately 5 kilometers south of the border. Military teams went to the scene and reported the presence of possible fragments of a drone. The area was secured”, it was stated in the press release of MApN.
