Folk calendar

Avramy Ovchar and Anastasia Ovechnitsa

The holiday was named in honor of two saints whose memory is celebrated today – Anastasia the Roman and Avramius of Rostov.

In Rus', Saint Anastasia was considered the patroness of sheep, and Saint Abramius was considered the patron saint of shepherds, who celebrated their holiday on this day.

The shepherds on Avramiya were treated to the whole village. The women brought them gifts – pies made from fresh flour. They said that thanks to such a gift the sheep would be healthy and safe. In the summer, the shepherds themselves, while grazing sheep, placed an icon of St. Anastasia on the trees: they said that she alone could protect domestic animals from wolves.

During this period of time, sheep were sheared. Sheep wool was spun, and warm socks and mittens were knitted from the threads, or warm fabrics were woven for winter clothing.

The children were asked riddles about sheep. For example, these: “A fur coat and a caftan walks across the mountains and valleys”; “He neither spins nor weaves, but clothes people.” There were also sayings about sheep: “Fathers also dressed in fleece from sheep”; “The sheep doesn’t remember its father, and the hay is of no use to it: when it’s full, it screams, when it’s hungry, it screams.”
