Railway disaster in Slovakia. Dozens of people injured, services are on site


The serious accident occurred on Sunday around 19:30 near the town of Pezinok, approx. 20 km from Bratislava. An express train from Kosice to Bratislava and a train from Bratislava to Nitra collided there. – I can confirm that there was an incident in which several people were injured – said the spokesman of Slovak Railways, Ján Baček, whose words were quoted by the websiteaktuality.sk.

Dozens of professional and volunteer firefighters, as well as other emergency services, work on site. Firefighters reported several dozen injured people. At least nine have serious injuries, local media emphasize.

Slovak police said that all passengers would be evacuated and buses would be brought to the scene. “Police officers are intensively providing assistance to rescue services at the scene of the incident and taking all actions to save the lives and health of passengers,” we read in the statement.

The Slovak Railways Board informed that the causes of the disaster are not yet clear. According to preliminary findings, there was no head-on collision of the trains and no derailment of one of them. Most likely, one of the trains attacked the other.

There are huge difficulties on site. Rail traffic is closed in both directions. The officers said that the accident would also cause difficulties for drivers.

“We appeal for increased patience and prudence and to follow police instructions,” we read in the message.

The Prime Minister of Slovakia issued a statement. “I recommend refraining”

In connection with the accident, a statement was posted on social media by Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, who said that first of all we should “unite and think about the injured”.

“I am in contact with the relevant members of the government. All rescue services have been activated. I wish the injured a speedy recovery. This tragic accident will also require a thorough investigation after the rescue operation to determine whether it was a technical failure or a human factor, as in the case of the previous railway accident,” said the head of the Slovak government, referring to the railway accident in Slovakia in mid-October, in which several dozen people were injured.

Robert Fico also recommended “that anyone who feels like commenting on today's train accident should refrain from hate speech and stupid conclusions that have no basis.”
