Folk calendar
Vow to Paraskeva
November 9 is the eve of the day of Saint Paraskeva, a Christian great martyr who lived in the 3rd century in Asia Minor.
In Rus', on this day it was customary to make vows – promises to do some work or do some necessary work. For example, peasant women often made a vow to weave a shroud for an icon of the Virgin Mary in one night. For fulfilling her vow, Paraskeva, it was believed, could fulfill her cherished desire or send health to loved ones.
If misfortune came to the house, you had to make a vow and fulfill it in complete silence, and the next morning go to church and pray to Saint Paraskeva, ask for her help. In this case, the trouble should have gone away.
On this occasion they said this: “When you carry a worthy desire in your thoughts, when someone is sick in your house and this is bitter for you, then remember the ancient belief, take a vow, take on the task and fulfill it in silence and concentration.”
