Marcel Popescu (76 years old), former president of the University of Craiova and collaborator of CFR Cluj in the past, analyzed what happened now with the team from Gruia and offered a reserved prognosis regarding the Transylvanian's chances of getting another play-off spot this season.
Romania's vice-champion is having a nightmare season, the round of the season being an extremely complicated one for the team that has so far been trained by Dan Petrescu and then by the Italian Andrea Mandorlini. In the first 15 rounds, CFR Cluj won only two matches and accumulated 13 points, being closer to the relegation places than to the play-offs.
With only 13 points from the first 15 matchesCFR has an extremely complicated mission in the next 15 stages of the return, and Marcel Popescu, the one who contributed to the rise of the club when it belonged to Arpad Paszkany, getting involved in bringing in Portuguese players, is not at all optimistic and believes that there are very little chances for the team to reach the play-offs.
Marcel Popescu did the calculations for CFR Cluj: “11 victories”
According to him, who analyzed what happened the previous season, CFR Cluj would still need 33 more points out of 45 possible in the return, which means 11 victories, a mission that seems, at least for the moment, a SF one.
“There are two championships. After 15 matches a conclusion can be drawn. Everyone has the discernment to analyze their situation. I think that FCSB has a chance for the play-offs and, unfortunately, one of the top performers, a club that I know very well, I was next to Iuliu Mureșan and Paszkany at the beginning, I think that it has very small chances day by day.
It's arithmetic: the points are 13. To enter, taking into account last year's statistics, they need 46 points, so they need 33 points from 15 matches on the return leg. It's not easy, there are 11 victories in short.
At the moment, I see the composition of the play-off quite safe for the top 3, but they are playing. As in the 15 stages there were revelations and big disappointments, it is possible that in the second part of the season the actors will change in the area of revelations and in the area of disappointments”, said Marcel Popescu, who was the president of the University of Craiova in 1991, the year in which the Oltenians achieved the last event, in the dialogue with GSP.ro.
