Ukraine was overnight the target of a new Russian attack on its energy infrastructure, resulting in one death and power outages in several regions, reports France Presse.
On its way to capturing the important logistics hub of Pokrovsk in the east of the country, the Russian military is also stepping up its shelling of gas and electricity facilities across the country, looming as a difficult winter for civilians as temperatures begin to drop.
“The enemy is again launching a massive attack on Ukraine's energy infrastructures. For this reason, emergency power cuts have been instituted in several regions,” Energy Minister Svitlana Grinchuk announced on Facebook.
Air alerts were sounded across much of Ukrainian territory overnight, with authorities in several regions, from Kharkiv (northeast) to Odesa (south), reporting drone and missile attacks or damage to energy facilities.
In Dnipro, a large eastern city, a drone strike destroyed a nine-story block of flats, killing a woman and hospitalizing six people with injuries, including a child, according to emergency services.

In Kiev, civil and military authorities said debris from downed aerial targets caused fires in two places in the central Petchersky district.
Problems for the Ukrainian energy system, attacked by the Russians
Russia is bombing Ukrainian cities almost daily as part of its offensive that began in February 2022. Its attacks have already caused significant damage to power plants and gas infrastructure.
According to a report published in late October by the Kyiv School of Economics (KSE) Institute, more than a quarter of electricity demand will not be able to be met this winter, and half of the country's natural gas production is out of order
The Ukrainians retaliate with long-range attacks, most often with drones.
In recent months, they have specifically targeted Russian energy infrastructure, with the goal of disrupting oil exports and cutting funding for Russia's war effort.
On the night of Friday to Saturday, Andrei Botcharov, the governor of the Russian region of Volgograd (south), located several hundred kilometers from the front, reported on Telegram a drone attack on energy infrastructures, causing power outages there as well.
