Several people were hurt and hospitalized after a suspicious package was delivered to a US military base in Maryland, according to CNN and Reuters.
A statement from Joint Base Andrews near Washington said a building on the base was evacuated after a person “opened a suspicious package.”
Several people were transported to the base's Malcolm Grove Medical Center.
“As a precaution, the building and the adjoining building were evacuated and the area was cordoned off,” the statement said.
“Joint Base Andrews Rapid Response Teams were dispatched to the scene, determined there was no immediate threat and turned the incident over to the Bureau of Special Investigations. The investigation is currently ongoing,” he said.
The package contained an unknown white powder, two sources with knowledge of the investigation told CNN.
Investigators are also evaluating elements of political propaganda that were in the package, the two sources said.
The initial field test by the HAZMAT team did not detect anything hazardous, but the investigation is continuing, a source said.
The US Department of Defense and Joint Base Andrews did not immediately respond to requests for comment, Reuters said.
