Hungary will buy nuclear fuel from the USA. It will go to the investment being developed by Russia


In a statement issued by the Hungarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Szijjarto revealed that the document he would sign with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio will concern nuclear fuel, storage of spent fuel rods and small modular reactors. The agreement will be concluded on Saturday, as part of the visit to the US of the Hungarian delegation led by Prime Minister Viktor Orban, which began on Friday.
“In addition to maintaining existing relationships with suppliers, for the first time in the history of the Hungarian energy sector “We will also buy American nuclear fuel” – informed the minister.
Power plant expanded by Russia
Szijjarto noted that expanding the national nuclear potential is crucial to maintaining Hungary's energy security and low energy bills in households. He added that the American company IBM will be co-responsible for the digitization of the Paks nuclear power plant.

The Russian state-owned company Rosatom is currently building two new nuclear units there with a capacity of 1,200 MW each. The project called Paks II is one of the key energy projects of the Orban government. The value of the entire investment should be approximately EUR 12 billion, and the project is to be entirely financed by the Hungarian state, which borrowed funds from Russia for this purpose.
Hungary is investing in nuclear energy
In June, the United States lifted sanctions related to the expansion of the power plant, imposed by former US President Joe Biden.
