The game between Qarabag and Chelseascore 0-5, counting for the 4th stage of the UEFA Youth League, was interrupted for several minutes after a shocking racist incident.

According to BBC Sport, an Azeri supporter imitated monkey gestures and sounds at the London players immediately after Sol Gordon scored the opening goal in the 57th minute.

The match was temporarily stopped

Chelsea's players and technical staff protested vehemently, calling for referee Dmytro Kubriak's intervention, and play was briefly stopped.

Although the Londoners were close to leaving the field, they decided to continue the game, which they won decisively, 5-0, securing the first position in the group with maximum points.

Chelsea reaction: “Racism has no place in football”

After the final whistle, the English club issued a firm statement:

We are aware of the incident during the match in Azerbaijan where some of our players were subjected to racist abuse by an individual in the stands.
Racism and any form of discriminatory behavior is completely unacceptable. We strongly condemn the actions of the person responsible. Our players have the full support of the club.

it is stated in the statement issued by Chelsea

Chelsea stressed that the incident was immediately reported to UEFA's delegate and called for a full investigation under European disciplinary regulations.

Qarabag publicly apologized

A Qarabag spokesman issued a public apology, stating that “the individual's actions do not represent the values of the club” and promising an internal investigation.

UEFA's official response will be formulated following the referee's and match delegate's report.

Total contrast between juniors and seniors

If Chelsea U19 prevailed 5-0 in the Youth League, the match between the senior teams had a different outcome.

Qarabag came back from 0-1 down, led 2-1, and managed to snatch a point from the Londoners, score 2-2, in the 4th stage of the single group of the UEFA Champions League.
