Every month, the Katowice branch of the Industrial Development Agency (ARP) informs about indices showing the level of domestic coal prices for the energy and heating industry, against the background of international prices. Publications take place at the beginning of the second month following the summary month.

According to these data, the value of the national coal index for the energy sector in September was PLN 331.12 per tonne (in qualitative terms, PLN 15.31 per gigajoule of energy generated from coal), compared to PLN 327.40 per tonne in August (PLN 15.11 per gigajoule), PLN 336.12 in July (PLN 15.59 per gigajoule), PLN in June (PLN 15.95 per gigajoule) and PLN 355.24 in May (PLN 16.29 per gigajoule).

Compared to September 2024, the value of this index was 29.9%. lower.

The average value of the coal price index for the energy sector in the entire third quarter of this year. amounted to PLN 330.87 per tonne (PLN 15.30 per gigajoule). Compared to Q3 2024, this index decreased by 30.6%, and compared to Q2 2025, it decreased by 6.0%.

The carbon index for heating reached in September this year. PLN 449.46 per tonne (PLN 19.35 per megajoule), compared to PLN 445.23 in August (PLN 19.38 per gigajoule), PLN 430.74 in July (PLN 18.79 per gigajoule), PLN 461.97 in June (PLN 19.70 per gigajoule) and PLN 469.66 in May (PLN 20.04 per gigajoule).

Compared to September 2024, the value of the index for heating was 20.8% lower.

The average value of the coal price index for heating in the entire third quarter of this year. amounted to PLN 442.05 per tonne (PLN 19.18 per gigajoule). Compared to Q3 2024, this index is 19.1% lower, and by Q2 2025 it is 6.0% lower.

Data from the Industrial Development Agency also show that September worldwide saw a month-on-month decline in coal prices. In Western European ARA ports (Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Antwerp) they decreased by 5.3%. compared to August 2025 and are 18.6% lower than in the same month a year earlier.

Calculated according to the conditions of ARA ports, the value of Polish indices in June this year amounted to USD 105.89 per tonne of coal for the energy sector and USD 133.84 per tonne of coal for the heating sector.

The Polish Steam Coal Market Indices are a group of price indices of benchmark thermal coal produced by domestic producers and sold on the domestic energy market and the domestic heat market. The Agency calculates them together with the Polish Power Exchange.

The PSCMI1 index (Polish Steam Coal Market Index) expresses coal prices for the so-called commercial and industrial power plants (for electricity production), PSCMI2 index – for industrial and municipal heating plants (for heat production).

The indices are based on monthly ex-post data and express the sales price of hard coal in a quality adapted to the needs of recipients. The value expressed in the indices is the net price of coal “on the wagon” at the loading point – without taking into account excise duty, insurance and delivery costs. (PAP)
