The doctor dispelled the myth about the benefits of baking soda for heartburn: no benefit, a complete side effect and problems with the gastrointestinal tract

According to Vladislav Sepp, Candidate of Pharmacological Sciences and Associate Professor of the Department of Pharmacy at the Institute of Pharmacy and Medicinal Chemistry at Pirogov University, using baking soda to relieve heartburn attacks does not bring the desired result. He spoke about this in a conversation with Gazeta.Ru (18+).

“Soda interacts with acid in the stomach, carbon dioxide is formed, it fills the stomach, stretches its walls, and this provokes a new release of acid. It turns out to be a vicious circle instead of treatment,” the doctor explained.

The specialist emphasized that frequent consumption of soda can lead to undesirable effects, such as bloating and other gastrointestinal disorders.

At the same time, soda will always be of interest as a biologically active substance. The drug can be used as a potential component of drugs for the treatment of various diseases, but only as part of drugs intended for single or short-term use.

“Adding increased doses of soda to the daily diet or regularly using it during increased physical activity is a fairly high risk of difficult to predict consequences, exactly the same as with the uncontrolled use of any medications without the consent of a doctor,” the doctor concluded.
