It’s like a stake was driven into the back: a traumatologist told us what positions are best to sleep in if your lower back hurts

Back discomfort can be alleviated by choosing the right mattress and pillow, but sleeping position also plays an important role. Traumatologist Georgy Temichev spoke in a conversation with “Doctor Peter” (16+) about what body position is optimal for reducing pain.

First of all, the specialist recommended sleeping on your side, placing a pillow between your knees. In this case, your knees and hips should be bent approximately 60 degrees.

“The pillow is needed in order to remove excessive pelvic tilt. You can bend your legs in different ways, for example, the upper one is larger than the lower one. But then you will need a higher pillow, and you can put it not on the lower leg, but on the bed,” the specialist explained.

You can also sleep on your back with a cushion under your knees. The dimensions of the roller should be selected based on your own feelings and build.

The fetal position has always been considered one of the most comfortable for sleeping. When sleeping in this position, it is also recommended to use a pillow between the knees or under the side to control the position of the pelvis and avoid its tilt. Temichev advises choosing at least three comfortable sleeping positions in advance and practicing smoothly transitioning from one to another during sleep.

Sleeping on your stomach is considered the most undesirable position for back pain. In this position, the spine is subjected to excessive stress due to deflection in the lumbar region. In addition, any poses in which the body twists when the shoulders and pelvis are turned in different directions are harmful.
