VIDEO Russia just launched a new type of submarine capable of launching its newest nuclear superweapon: 'It will reshape naval planning around the world'

Russia has launched its first nuclear submarine capable of carrying the Poseidon nuclear torpedoes, Russia's new superweapon thought of as ships or drones in their own right, which can cover huge distances, lie in wait for a long time underwater and, when detonated, can cause huge radioactive waves to destroy entire coastal areas.

According to Russian media, the Khabarovsk nuclear submarine – the first of its class – was launched on November 1 and is scheduled to enter service in 2026. The launch ceremony took place at the Sevmash shipyard in Severodvinsk.

Submarine Khabarovsk (or Khabrovsk) can carry up to 12 unmanned nuclear-powered torpedoes. Moscow claims that the Poseidon system can hit targets anywhere in the world's oceans.

The Khabarovsk submarine is designed for long-range strategic missions and can operate in the open ocean as part of Russia's nuclear arsenal.

From publicly available information, the new submarine is not a very large one, having a length of 113m and a displacement of 10,000 tons. It can reach a maximum speed of 32 knots and can dive up to 500 meters.

The submarine would have a crew of 100 sailors and an autonomy at sea of more than 100 days.

Russia claims to have already tested Poseidon nuclear torpedoes

Vladimir Putin said a few days ago that Russia tested the Poseidon nuclear super-torpedo and that the test was a great success, Reuters reported.

US and Russian officials have described the Poseidon as a new class of retaliatory weapon, capable of unleashing radioactive waves into the ocean that would render coastal cities uninhabitable.

The Kremlin leader said Wednesday in a discussion with soldiers wounded in the war in Ukraine that the test took place on Tuesday.

“For the first time, we managed not only to launch it with a launch engine from a carrier submarine, but also to launch the nuclear power unit on which this device spent a certain period of time,” Putin said.

“It's a huge success,” Putin said, adding that Poseidon's power exceeded that of the Sarmat ICBM.

What is known about Poseidon nuclear torpedoes

The “Poseidon superships” are designed as retaliatory weapons, that is, designed to respond to a nuclear attack on Russia, Il Giornale wrote two years ago.

“This principle,” continues the analysis in the Italian newspaper, “is reflected in the construction technology of the torpedo: Poseidon, in fact, having nuclear propulsion, is not only capable of striking at a very long distance, but can also remain 'on hold' to be activated for an indefinite period of time.”

The torpedo is intended to bypass undetected coastal defense systems, such as those of the US, CNN indicated.

Moreover, this type of weapon, with a capacity of several megatons, could cause radioactive waves in coastal areas, making them uninhabitable for a long time.

“It will reshape naval planning”

“This nuclear 'mega-torpedo' is unique in world history,” US submarine expert HI Sutton wrote on his website.

“The Poseidon is an entirely new category of weapon. It will reshape naval planning in both Russia and the West, leading to new requirements and new counter-weapons,” Sutton wrote.

Both U.S. and Russian officials said the torpedoes could launch multi-megaton warheads, causing radioactive fallout that would render portions of the targeted coastline uninhabitable for decades.

An unmanned submarine and de facto torpedo, the Poseidon is 24 meters long and armed with a 10 megaton nuclear warhead.

Carried by a mother submarine (Belgorod or Khabarovsk), the torpedo has a maximum range of 11,500 kilometers and is considered one of the quietest and most lethal drones in the nuclear fleet, especially due to its speed and depth.
