A man and a woman were killed and at least 10 others injured in a town on the Greek island of Crete on Saturday in what a senior police official described as a family vendetta, according to Reuters and AFP.

The state news agency ANA reported that a 50-year-old woman and a man died after an individual opened fire on homes in Vorizia, a town 52 kilometers southwest of the island's capital, Iraklio.

Police have not yet released information about the alleged attacker.

Another police official said the attack came hours after an explosion on Friday night at a construction site where a bomb had been planted.

Both police officials spoke on condition of anonymity.

The authorities have secured the area so that ambulances can pick up the victims, reported the public television station TV ERT.

Senior Greek police officials, including the head of the police force and the head of the organized crime unit, traveled to Crete on Saturday, the second official said.

Crete has a history of violent vendettas between families due to feuds motivated by revenge, wounded pride and perceived insults.

Last Sunday, a 23-year-old man fatally shot a 52-year-old man during a local event in western Crete.
