The General Assembly of the United Nations voted on Friday with an overwhelming majority in favor of a declaration presenting “concrete measures, with precise and irreversible terms” for a solution with two states between Israel and Palestinian, reports Reuters, taken by News.ro.

The seven -page statement is the result of an international conference organized in the UN in July – hosted by Saudi Arabia and France – on the conflict lasting for decades. The United States and Israel boycotted the event. The resolution that supports the statement received 142 votes for and 10 against, while 12 countries abstained.

Hamas attack, officially convicted by the UN

Romania, which recognized the Palestinian state of 1988, during the Ceausescu period, voted in favor of the resolution. Among the countries that abstained are the Republic of Moldova, while Argentina and Hungary are among the countries that voted against.

The vote took place before a meeting of the world leaders provided on September 22 – in the margin of the UN General Assembly – where several Western states are expected to officially recognize the Palestinian state.

The statement approved by the General Assembly, consisting of 193 members, condemns the attacks on the Israel of the Palestinian militants Hamas on October 7, 2023, which triggered the Gaza War. It also condemns the attacks of Israel against civilians and civil infrastructure in Gaza, siege and hunger, “which led to a devastating humanitarian catastrophe and a protection crisis.”

The French Foreign Minister, Jean-Noel Barrot, said the resolution ensures the international isolation of Hamas. “Today, for the first time, the United Nations has adopted a text that condemns these crimes and requests the delivery and disarmament,” he said in a post on X.

Israel: “A gift for Hamas”

The resolution was supported by all Gulf Arab states. Israel and the United States voted against Argentina, Hungary, Micronia, Nauru, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Paraguay and Tonga.

The statement approved by this resolution says that the Gaza war “must end now” and supports a temporary international stabilization mission mandated by the UN Security Council.

The United States has described the vote as “still a wrong and inopportune advertising maneuver” that undermines serious diplomatic efforts to end the conflict.

“Do not be mistaken, this resolution is a gift for Hamas,” said American diplomat Morgan Ortagus in front of the General Assembly. “Far from promoting peace, the conference has already extended the war, encouraged Hamas and harmed peace prospects in both the short and long -term,” the US representative accused.

Israel, who has long criticizes the UN for not explicitly condemned Hamas for October 7 attacks, rejected the statement as unilateral and described the vote as a masquerade. “The only beneficiary is Hamas … When the terrorists are the ones who applaud, do not promote peace, but promote terror,” said Israel's ambassador Danny Danon.

The Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, 2023 killed 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and 251 were taken hostage, according to Israeli data. Over 64,000 people, mostly civilians, have been killed since the war in Gaza, according to local health authorities.
