Folk calendar

Midsummer's Day, Farewell to Autumn

On this day, Orthodox Christians celebrate the transfer of the relics of St. John of Rila.

In Rus', on Ivanov (John) day, they said goodbye to autumn and welcomed winter. From this time on, real frosts began. “Whoever doesn’t feel cold in November will not freeze in the Epiphany cold,” people said. They also watched the weather: if it was snowing and it was cold, then spring should be expected to be late and cold; if there was a thaw, the next spring promised to be warm.

There was a belief that the stable brownie was making trouble with Ivan – ruffling the manes of mares, raising stallions on their hind legs. “The path is difficult for a harnessed horse,” people said and gave the horses a rest. But the chickens had no time for fun – on this day it was customary to cut them and prepare various dishes from the tender meat. The table was decorated with fried chicken, noodles in chicken broth, and kurniks—special pies.
