According to the publication Rai News, the Court of Modena pronounced the sentence on Friday in the case of Marcelino Căldărariu, accused, together with another Romanian, of the murder of Alessandro Gozzoli. The Jury Court judges recognized general mitigating circumstances for the defendant and ordered compensation for the victim's parents and sister.
The second accomplice, Petre Dăbuleanu, aged 22, had already been previously sentenced to 18 years in prison.
How the crime happened
The investigation established that the two young Romanians tied Alessandro Gozzoli to the bed and suffocated him, in order to steal a laptop, a watch and some credit cards. After the murder, they fled in the victim's car.
The two were caught a few weeks later, one in Romania and the other in the UK, and charged with voluntary manslaughter and robbery.
Căldărariu's defense argued during the trial that there was no intent to kill. Pending the reasoning of the sentence, his lawyer has already announced that he will appeal.
Recently, in Italy, another case of murder shook public opinion. A 41-year-old Romanian killed his 64-year-old partner, Veronica Abaza, and tried to hide the deed. The woman reportedly returned home drunk on the night of the murder, and at first her death appeared to have been caused by natural causes. Later, investigations revealed the tragic truth.
