The Japanese protested against Donald Trump's decision. “Absolutely unacceptable”

“This directive contradicts the efforts of nations around the world to build a peaceful world without nuclear weapons and is absolutely unacceptable,” we read in the letter, quoted by AFP on Friday.

What decision did Trump announce?

How did Nihon Hidankyo react?

What do the mayors of Nagasaki think about Trump's decision?

When was the last time the US conducted nuclear tests?

The letter by Nihon Hidankyo, who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for her activities last year, is a reaction to Trump's statement, which on Thursday announced that he had ordered the resumption of nuclear weapons tests “on an equal footing with other countries.” The politician justified this with the test programs of other countries, although he did not provide examples.

The mayor of Nagasaki, Shiro Suzuki, also said that Trump's decision “undermines the efforts of people from all over the world who have shed blood and tears for a world without nuclear weapons.” He pointed out that this announcement was made by the person whom Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi intended to nominate for the Nobel Peace Prize.

“There are no winners or losers in a nuclear war. All of humanity loses,” two other associations of survivors of the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima emphasized in a statement. Protesters demand an immediate halt to all plans to test nuclear weapons, recalling the “inhuman nature” of these weapons, visible “in the devastation observed in Hiroshima and Nagasaki.”

The United States has not conducted nuclear tests since 1992.

The atomic bombs dropped by the United States on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945 killed over 200,000. people. These are the only examples of the use of nuclear weapons in war.
