The president of the UDMR, Kelemen Hunor, told Digi24.ro on Tuesday that the High Court of Cassation and Justice (ÎCCJ) and the Superior Council of the Magistrates (CSM) “misunderstood” his statements about the project regarding the magistrates' pensions.

“They scourged me (…). I didn't attack them (…), I was always on the side of the magistrates. I didn't really understand why they shot the pianist”, said Kelemen Hunor.

On Monday evening, on Digi 24, the UDMR leader had said that the draft on magistrates' pensions “was sent to the informal Court for analysis” before it was adopted.

In response, on Tuesday, the president of the ÎCCJ sent a press release stating that Kelemen Hunor's statements “do not correspond to reality and risk affecting public trust in the independence of the judiciary.”

“The assignment to the supreme court of a role of “legislative advisor” of the Government or the Parliament represents a serious distortion of the constitutional order and a violation of the principle of the separation of powers in the state,” reads the statement sent by Lia Savonea.

The CSM, in turn, sent a statement, claiming that the former deputy prime minister referred to the Constitutional Court of Romania in his statements on Monday evening, not to the ÎCCJ, and said that a prior consultation of the CCR is an “unacceptable and unprecedented incident, which creates the conditions for violating the constitutional balance between the executive and legislative powers, on the one hand, and the judicial power, on the other.”

In the statements made on Tuesday for Digi24.ro, the UDMR leader said that he referred to the consultations that took place between the Government and the magistrates before the adoption of the project.
