The Ukrainian army said on Friday that it had hit four war planes in an air base in Volgograd, a region in central Russia, as part of an effort to attack Russian war instruments, reports Reuters.

In a message on the Telegram app, the Kiev army said it hit four Russian Su-34 aircraft at the base of Marinkova near Volgograd, about 900 kilometers away from the Ukraine border.

In the post it is mentioned that the mission was performed by the structure of the army for special operations, along with the Security Service (SBU) and other structures of the army.

“According to preliminary information, four aircraft were hit, especially Su-34 aircraft, as well as technical-operative installations where different war planes are maintained and repaired,” says the Ukrainian army.

There was no immediate comment from the Russian army.

Ukraine has been employed in recent months in a series of long-range operations against Russian military targets-industrial, energy and other locations.

Earlier this month, the Ukrainian army performed a major attack, nicknamed the “spider's web operation”, in which a large number of Russian bombers with a long range in Russian air bases were hit away from the territory of Ukraine.

In the most recent statement it is mentioned that the damage caused by the Marinkova attack are being evaluated. The SU-34 is described as the main Russian plane used in bombing on the Ukrainian territory, especially for launching guided bombs, being used more and more in attacks on Ukrainian cities.

The war unleashed by Russia against Ukraine entered the fourth year, in February 2025. On Friday, in a press conference at Minsk, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that Russia and Ukraine peace proposals are “absolutely contradictory”, but that this is not a surprise and that the parties talk about a new round.

On Thursday, the Ukrainian Minister of Defense, Rustem Humorov, said the next Kiev objective in negotiations with Moscow is to organize a direct meeting between presidents Volodimir Zelenski and Vladimir Putin, according to The Kyiv Independent.
