A small plane crashed in Kenya's coastal Kwale region on Tuesday morning while en route to the Maasai Mara National Reserve. 12 people are missing, and the authorities fear that they have died, writes CNN.

The crash occurred in a hilly and wooded area, about 40 kilometers from the Diani airfield, authorities said. The passengers were all foreign tourists, and their nationalities are yet to be confirmed.

The Kenyan Civil Aviation Authority announced that 12 people were on board the Cessna Caravan aircraft and authorities are investigating the cause of the accident. It is not known how many of them were passengers and how many were crew members.

The plane crashed minutes after takeoff and burst into flames, leaving a charred wreckage at the crash site, officials said.

Witnesses told AP that they heard a loud bang, and when they arrived at the scene they found unrecognizable human remains.

Mombasa Air Safari told the AP it was working with the civil aviation authority and that updates on the crash would be communicated through it.

The Maasai Mara National Reserve is a popular tourist destination famous for the annual animal migration from the Serengeti, Tanzania.
