The name “yen” comes from the Japanese word “round”, which obviously refers to the shape of the coins. As a currency, the yen appeared on the wave of reforms intended to change feudal Japan into a modern country modeled on European countries. The new currency replaced many other currencies that existed in local fiefs. The Bank of Japan, established in 1882, safeguarded its value.
Initially, the yen was linked to gold and you could get 1.5 grams of gold for yen, but in 1931 the authorities withdrew from this parity. The next one was introduced after World War II, when in 1949 the yen was linked to the dollar, and one dollar could get 360 yen.
