A pipeline of the natural gas distribution network was damaged on Tuesday, on Popa Petre Street in Sector 2 of the Capital, following mechanized excavation works carried out by Termoenergetica, Distrigaz Sud Rețele announced in a press release.

The incident occurred around 2:30 p.m., and the natural gas supply was temporarily stopped in the area. A total of 91 domestic and non-domestic customers were affected by the outage.

Natural gas supply was restored around 4 p.m., according to the company.

Distrigaz recommends that tenants, if they smell gas, immediately call the emergency numbers 021 9281, 031 9031 or 0800 877 778, ventilate the room, avoid operating the electrical switches and, if possible, close the supply valve.

On Monday evening, several fire crews and Distrigaz teams intervened near the Capital City Hall, after a call to 112 that signaled a strong smell of gas. Traffic was temporarily blocked on Ion Câmpineanu boulevard, Nicolae Bălcescu and Calea Victoriei.

The acting mayor of the capital, Stelian Bujduveanu, confirmed then that it was a breakdown of an underground gas pipe and specified that there was no danger for the population. “There is a breakdown in a gas pipe. There is no reason to panic, but we will ask for post-intervention checks,” said the mayor.

ISU Bucharest-Ilfov later reported that the technical problem was fixed by the gas company's teams, and the area was reopened to traffic.

Monday's alert came less than two weeks after the explosion in Rahova, produced on October 17, following some gas accumulations. The explosion destroyed an apartment block, killed three people and injured 15 others.
