The richest man on the African continent, Aliko Dangote, announced that the refinery he owns in Nigeria, which is the largest in Africa, will double its production capacity in the next three years, up to 1.4 million barrels per day, which would make it “the largest refinery in the world”, writes AFP.
“We are about to double production… to 1.4 million barrels per day from 650,000,” said Aliko Dangote, the owner of the refinery, during a press conference in Lagos on Sunday.
“This would make it the largest refinery in the world”, surpassing the Jamnagar refinery (India), estimated the Nigerian businessman.
The owner of Dangote Petroleum Refinery also said he plans to list the refinery on the stock market next year, with the idea of allowing Nigerians to own shares and benefit from its success.
“This expansion reflects our confidence in Nigeria's future, in Africa's potential and our commitment to building the continent's energy independence,” added Aliko Dangote.
Before the inauguration of the private Dangote Petroleum Refinery in January last year, Nigeria had to import almost all of its fuels, even though it is the largest oil producer in Africa.
