Tragedy in the Făgăraş Mountains: two people died after falling hundreds of meters in the Vârfului Netedu area

Two people lost their lives on Saturday in the Făgăraş Mountains, in the Vârfului Netedu area, and a third was rescued and transported by the SMURD helicopter to Bâlea Lac, announced Dan Popescu, director of Salvamont Sibiu, according to the publication Turnul Sfatului.

“Today, three people slipped from the western slope of Vârful Netedu, towards Valea Arpaşelului. One of them managed to stop, but the other two fell a few hundred meters down the steep slope, suffering injuries incompatible with life. The living person was recovered by the SMURD helicopter, by trolling a mountain rescuer, and transported safely to Bâlea Lac. At the scene of the accident, a mountain rescuer who ascertained the death of the other two people”, stated Popescu.
The two victims are two men from Ploiești, aged 35 and 50, respectively, Salvamont Sibiu representatives say.
Due to difficult terrain and adverse weather conditions, the bodies of the two victims could not be recovered on Saturday. “The recovery operation will be resumed tomorrow, both by land and by air, depending on the evolution of the weather”added the director of Salvamont Sibiu.
The first information shows that the people involved were not properly equipped for the winter conditions in the area. For now, their ages and identities are unknown.
The Salvamont teams will return to the accident area on Sunday to continue the intervention.
