At 40, Scott Carson announced his retirement after his contract with Manchester City expired in the summer. He played only two matches for the “citizens” in six years, but left with a full wallet.
The goalkeeper is ending a career spanning over 20 years, in which he has amassed over 500 matches and represented clubs such as Leeds, Liverpool and Aston Villa. At “citizens”, however, he decided to spend the last years of his professional life, in a role that, for many, would be a dream. At least financially.
Scott Carson: €4.6 million per match, €3.2 million per intervention and €400,000 per touch
Carson spent six years with Pep Guardiola's team, always as the third goalkeeper. Therefore, he played only two matches: one in 2020-2021, another in 2021-2022, a total of 117 minutes on the pitch.
Well, according to the international media, the former England player left City with little playing time, indeed, but with a full wallet. In round figures, he collected 4.6 million euros per match, 3.2 million euros per intervention and 400 thousand euros for each touch of the ball.
But it wasn't just Scott Carson's wallet that was full: his track record, too. The former goalkeeper, a highly regarded figure in the Citizens' dressing room, won ten trophies with the club: four Premier Leagues, one Champions League, one European Super Cup, one Club World Championship, one FA Cup, one FA Super Cup and two League Cups.
Incidentally, one of Carson's two appearances for Manchester City was against Sporting in the second leg of the 2021-22 UEFA Champions League Round of 16, when he came on for Ederson in the 73rd minute.
