Former Premier League defender, George Baldockwas found dead in his home in Athens in October 2024. The tragedy occurred after his partner, Annabel Dignam, worried that she could no longer contact him, alerted the owner of the villa where they lived.

Following the search, Baldock was discovered in the communal pool of the complex in Glyfada, a suburb of the Greek capital.

The investigation established that the death was accidental, with no traces of alcohol or drugs in the footballer's body. The former Sheffield United and Panathinaikos player was due to fly to England the very next day to celebrate his son Brodie's first birthday.

Huge fortune left to his son

According to court documents seen by The Sun, Baldock left behind a total fortune of £5,781,399, reduced to £4,091,003 after paying debts.

The former Greece international did not make a will and the entire sum will be administered by his fiancee, Annabel Dignam, “for the use and benefit of the minor Brodie Baldock” until he turns 18.

The family left a message full of grief

Shortly after the tragedy, the footballer's partner published an emotional message on Instagram:

“George, the love of my life, my soul mate. The perfect daddy for our little boy. You completed me. You were my world and I know we were yours. You are here with me in Brodie's smile and laugh. My world will never be the same. I love you forever.”

Baldock's family also released a heartbreaking statement:

“George, you were the most special father, fiance, son, brother, uncle, friend, teammate and man. Your infectious personality brought so much love to those who were lucky enough to know you. You were supposed to fly home today to celebrate your son's first birthday, but instead we mourn your loss.”

George Baldock had an important career in English football

Born in Buckinghamshire, Baldock featured throughout his career for MK Dons, Oxford United, Tamworth, Northampton Town and most notably Sheffield United, for whom he amassed no less than 219 appearances between 2017-2024.

The defender was nicknamed 'Furious George' for his aggressive and energetic style, instrumental in two promotions to the Premier League in 2019 and 2023.

Although born in England, Baldock chose to represent the Greek national team, due to his grandmother's origins, ticking off 12 caps. In the summer of 2024, he had signed with Panathinaikos, a team in the first Greek league.

Sheffield United's tribute

After his death, Sheffield United held a special moment at the 'Bramall Lane' stadium. All the fans rose to their feet to sing “Starman”, the song that became his signature song during his time at the club.

At the end of the match, the players waved a Greek flag emblazoned with the message “Starman” and the number 2 in memory of one of the most beloved players in the team's recent history.
