The MegaFon operator has implemented domestically developed CGNAT systems on its network. This increased the reliability of the network and speeded up user access to Internet resources.
There are about 4.3 billion unique public IP addresses in the world, and most of them are already taken. At the same time, the number of devices connected to the Internet today amounts to tens of billions, and it is impossible to give everyone a public IP address when accessing the network. This problem is solved by CGNAT (Carrier-grade NAT) complexes, which provide Internet access under address space restrictions.
Unlike the equipment used by foreign manufacturers, the CGNAT platforms of the Russian companies RDP and NFWare are a software product that runs on both physical and virtual servers. This makes it easier and less costly to scale the operator’s network infrastructure to accommodate traffic growth. In addition, the transition to domestic solutions minimized the risks of refusals in technical support and blocking by foreign companies that the telecom industry has faced in recent years.
The network architecture that MegaFon developed taking into account the advantages of domestic solutions allows us to build a long-term infrastructure development program against the backdrop of constantly growing traffic and the need for node reservation systems in different geographical locations. This approach increases network stability and ensures continuity of data transmission.
“The transition to domestic CGNAT platforms is not just another step towards import substitution, but a conscious investment in the sustainability and development of the network. Russian software systems allow flexible distribution of traffic between network nodes and ensure readiness for growth in traffic, subscriber base and number of services provided. Moreover, we plan to gradually replace the entire fleet of outdated foreign equipment that performs the function of address translation with domestic solutions, eliminating external risks and strengthening the independence of our infrastructure,” said Andrey Krishtofovich, MegaFon’s director for transport network development.
