French President Emmanuel Macron has promised that the thieves who looted the Louvre Museum in Paris on Sunday morning will be caught and the stolen items recovered.
“Everything possible is being done, on all fronts, to reach this result, under the coordination of the Paris Public Prosecutor's Office,” he said in a message published on social networks, quoted by Le Figaro.
“The theft committed at the Louvre is an attack on a heritage that we value, because it is part of our history. We will recover the works and the authors will be brought to justice,” continued the French president.
“The Louvre Nouvelle Renaissance project, which we launched in January, provides for increased security measures. It will guarantee the preservation and protection of what represents our memory and culture,” Macron wrote.
Robbery at the Louvre Museum
Jewels of “inestimable value” were stolen from the Louvre Museum in Paris on Sunday morning, the French culture ministry said.
The thieves made off with eight items of inestimable value, and a ninth item they had tried to steal was found at the scene, namely the crown of Empress Eugenie, made of 1,354 diamonds and 56 emeralds. She was found damaged near the museum, a source close to the investigation told AFP.
According to information published by the newspaper Le Parisien, two of the thieves operated from a truck equipped with a cargo lift and two came on a scooter.
They arrived in front of the museum at 9:30 in the morning. They then used the freight elevator to reach the Apollo Gallery on the first floor, forcing open the window with an angle grinder.
The thieves smashed two display cases, one for “Napoleon's jewels” and the other for “French sovereigns' jewels”, using the same angle grinder, before stealing the jewels.
