Vladimir Putin's huge problem. Thousands of soldiers deserted from their units

The data presented by Ukrainian intelligence cover the period from November 2024 to July 2025 and refer to units of the Central Military District (one of the five military districts of the Russian army). There are also cases of desertion with weapons in their possession.

Why do soldiers desert?
The reasons for leaving military service are, first of all, extremely unfavorable conditions in military units (including the phenomenon of the so-called wave, in Russia referred to as dyedovshchyna – mistreatment of older soldiers against younger ones), shortages of equipment and the so-called meat assaults during which the Russian army suffers heavy losses.
According to statistics published on Saturday by the Ukrainian General Staff, Russian losses since the beginning of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine amounted to 1,129,180 soldiers (killed, wounded, missing, prisoners), of which 1,150 in the last 24 hours
