The Gaza press office claims Israel has violated the cease-fire agreement with Hamas 47 times since it came into effect, killing 38 Palestinians and injuring 143 others, The Guardian reports.
“These violations included the offense of direct fire against civilians, bombing and deliberate targeting, as well as the arrest of a number of civilians, reflecting the occupation's continued policy of aggression despite the declared end of the war,” the statement said.
Gaza authorities called on “the United Nations and the guarantor parties to the agreement to urgently intervene to compel the occupation to end the ongoing aggression and protect unarmed civilian populations.”
A total of 11 members of a Palestinian family were killed by Israeli forces on Friday in an incident described as the worst violation of the ceasefire that took effect eight days ago.
Gaza's civil defense agency says the family was trying to get to their home in the Zeitoun neighborhood of Gaza City when the bus they were on was attacked for allegedly crossing the so-called “yellow line” that demarcates areas controlled by the Israeli army.
“They crossed the so-called 'yellow line', an imaginary border mentioned by the Israeli army,” said Mahmoud Basal, spokesman for Gaza's civil defense. “I'm sure the family couldn't tell the difference between the yellow and red lines because there are no actual physical markings on the field,” he added.
The victims include seven children and three women, according to images released by Gaza's civil defense agency.
What the Israeli army says
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) told The Guardian “a suspicious vehicle was spotted crossing the yellow line and approaching IDF troops operating in the northern Gaza Strip.”
“The troops fired warning shots at the suspect vehicle, but the vehicle continued to approach the troops in a manner that caused an imminent threat to them. The troops opened fire to eliminate the threat, in accordance with the agreement,” the IDF claims.
The incident occurred as Israel and Hamas continue to accuse each other of violating the ceasefire.
Israel accused the militant organization of violating the agreement by not returning the lifeless bodies of the hostages who died. On Monday, Hamas released the 20 surviving hostages still being held in Gaza, but returned only the bodies of 10 of the 28 dead hostages, saying it would need specialized equipment to recover the rest of the remains from the ruins.
