Criminal caught after 26 years and brought to trial: his genetic profile was identical to the evidence at the scene

The man who killed and raped a 75-year-old woman in Tulcea County in 1999 was caught last year and sent to court, after evidence from the scene matched his genetic profile from the National Forensic Genetic Data System.

According to the prosecutors, on the night of July 25-26, 1999, the defendant illegally entered the victim's home, in a village in Tulcea county.

“By exercising some acts of violence/coercion, the defendant maintained a sexual relationship with the victim. At the same time, in order to prevent the victim from screaming/making noise and thus alarming the neighbors/passers-by, as well as to hide the commission of the crimes of rape and domestic violence, the defendant continued to exercise acts of serious violence against the injured person”, the prosecutors stated in a press release. Later, the victim's body was hidden under a metal bed.

Among the evidence administered in the file is a forensic genetic expertise report, issued on August 6, 2025 by the Forensic Institute within the IGPR, which confirmed that the genetic profile of the defendant corresponds to the one obtained from the crime scene.

“We note that among the evidence administered in the case is a forensic genetic expert report dated August 6, 2025, issued by the Forensic Institute within the IGPR, which shows that the genetic profile of the defendant – identified in the database of genetic profiles within the National Judicial Genetic Data System – is identical to the genetic profile of the male person obtained as a result of the analysis of biological traces from the scene of the crime”the General Prosecutor's Office also sent.

The 46-year-old man was caught last fall and is currently in pre-trial detention.

The file was sent for resolution to the Tulcea Court.
