Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola (54) has issued a scathing response after his former club mate Carles Planchart (59) suggested the Spaniard should “regenerate” and take a break from coaching.
The Catalan coach joked about the comments, saying he has no plans to stop until 2035, insisting he still has the energy and motivation to lead the Citizens into a new era.
Pep Guardiola, ironic answer for his former colleague: “He's right, but I won't think about it until 2035”
Spaniard Pep Guardiola, already in his ninth season on the City bench, explained that although in the past he needed breaks after intense spells at Barcelona and Bayern Munich, now the situation is different.
“Planchart is right, but I won't think about it until 2035,” Pep said at Friday's press conference ahead of the Premier League clash with Everton.
“I feel really good. I've changed a lot in the last few years and the energy I get from the staff and the new players is huge.
I felt in Barcelona and Munich that if I became a problem, I had to take a step back. Now I don't have that feeling. I have energy, I have motivation and I feel like I still have work to do here.”
Guardiola also spoke about the new cycle at City: “The work is not finished yet”
The 54-year-old coach emphasized that he does not consider his Manchester City mission over, even if he has won everything there is to win.
“I feel there is still work to do. My goal is to help the players be better than last season. I'm not thinking about trophies, I'm thinking about performance.
I see things going better than last year, and that gives me energy. It's not a done deal, I came here on a long-term mission and it's not over yet.”
The Spanish technician managed a historic transformation of the club
Guardiola explained that parting ways with the club will come “naturally” when he, the board and the players feel the cycle is over.
“In life, when you repeat the same project too much, at some point you feel you have to do something else. I have a very close and sincere relationship with Khaldoon Al-Mubarak (no club president), and when that time comes, we will both know it. But now I am here, I am happy and I have the energy to continue.”
Pep Guardiola has been at Manchester City since 2016, during which he managed a historic transformation of the club – 543 official matches in charge of the team, 389 wins and an average of 2.28 points per game.
With the Citizens, Pep managed to win no less than 19 trophies, including the Premier League and the Champions League.
