American rock star Bruce Springsteen made a surprise appearance on the red carpet of the London Film Festival on Wednesday, showing his appreciation for the cast and makers of the new biopic about the artist's life, writes Reuters.
“Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere” stars actor Jeremy Allen White, known for the TV series “The Bear” (from 2022), who plays the multiple Grammy Award winner. But instead of focusing on his successful artistic career, the film offers a raw depiction of the man behind the music.
Directed and written by Scott Cooper, the film is based on the book of the same name by Warren Zanes. The film follows Springsteen as a young man on the verge of success, but struggling with inner demons and childhood trauma while writing the hard-hitting 1982 album Nebraska.
Actor Jeremy Allen White said the drama, which also explores Springsteen's strained relationship with his father, played by Stephen Graham, shows a difficult but defining period in the rocker's life.
“I think the essence of the movie is the desire to have a family connection and the relationship between him and his father,” White said. “I think at this time in his life he made decisions that allowed him to live the life he wanted,” the actor added.
The film also stars “Succession” star Jeremy Strong as Jon Landau, Springsteen's manager, who has always supported him.
“It's a film about Bruce and the making of the 'Nebraska' album, but it's also about healing trauma through art and dealing with depression and mental health issues,” said Jeremy Strong.
“I think it's an incredibly brave story — to tell about someone as mythologized as Bruce, to describe Bruce the man,” Strong said.
The film is the first to depict the musician's life on the big screen. Springsteen, 76, was closely involved in the production process.
“From the beginning, he listened to me sing his songs. He said, 'You sing really well. You have a voice like mine, not just like mine. You put your stamp on the songs, and I want the whole process to feel like that,'” White recalls. “Without this kind of blessing, I don't think I could have done what I did,” the actor added.
“He was very generous in every way. He gave me the guitar that I learned to play. I still have it,” White noted.
The film will be released in theaters worldwide on October 22.
